Oakley Station CSO 551 & 553 Separation Sewer Project Wins National Award of Merit

The Design-Build Institute of America awards IBI Group the National Award of Merit in the Water/Wastewater category.

The Design-Build Institute of America awarded IBI Group’s Oakley Station CSO 551 & 553 Separation Sewer Project the National Award of Merit in the Water/Wastewater category.

During the design of the adjacent 75-acre Oakley Station project, IBI Group recognized that there was an opportunity to separate a significant portion of the storm water that is tributary to the Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). Cincinnati’s Hamilton County was encumbered by a legacy sewer system where two CSOs discharge more than 66 million gallons of polluted water into the Duck Creek each year. By changing the drainage pattern and intercepting the drainage with a large storm sewer constructed using trenchless approaches, the project and adjacent areas could drain directly to the creek, bypassing the combined system.

Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati’s (MSDGC) long-term goal for these two CSOs was to eliminate 80% of the annual CSO volume by 2020, the trenchless approach completely eliminates any CSOs at these two locations. The proposed solution in the Long Term Control Plan was projected to cost $17.5 million. Our fast-tracked plan enabled the client to reach this goal seven years ahead of schedule and at a cost of $8.55 million. In addition to the savings to the client, 462 million gallons of combined sewer overflow were prevented from entering Duck Creek.

The Oakley Station CSO 551 and CSO 553 Separation Sewer Project was the first design-build procurement for the MSDGC. Ulliman-Schutte Construction (USC) was the successful bidder in Fall 2012 and IBI Group was the designer/ engineer of record.

The project is also a nominee for a National Award of Excellence in the same category. Winners to be announced at the Design-Build Conference & Expo November 3, 2015.
